SMI – Green by Brand, Green by Ethics.

These days, environmental awareness is at the forefront of political debate, social consciousness and business objectives. Any organisation who wants to be respected as an ethical brand needs to get smarter in terms of mitigating the adverse impacts of operations, on the environments and communities in which they operate.

SMI recognised this in 2010, when we gained our ISO 14001 Environmental Management certification, in recognition of the positive steps which we take to offset our carbon emissions and operate ethically across all elements of our business.

This year, we’ve improved even further, calculating our carbon footprint and making a clear commitment to taking action which will work towards mitigating any potentially harmful environmental impacts resulting from our manufacturing, importing, order fulfilment and more.

SMI partners with The Woodland Trust

We have recently decided to work in partnership with The Woodland Trust, to take tangible steps to offset our carbon footprint through reforestation. The Woodland Trust in one of the largest charities in the UK, with over 500,000 members and supporters and more than 1,000 sites, covering over 26,000 hectares, nationally.

They protect and campaign on behalf of this country’s woods, plant trees, and restore ancient woodland for the benefit of wildlife and people, with a vision to create a UK rich in native woods and trees, for people and wildlife.

SMI is setting aside a budget each year, to support the Trust to plant new trees and woodland close to existing wildlife-rich areas such as ancient woods or concentrations of ancient trees. This buffers them from the impacts of neighbouring land use and connects existing habitats. Through our membership, we’ll be assisting in reforestation and restoration, maximising green areas and enabling the Trust to plant trees on our behalf, to work towards being a carbon-neutral organisation.

Being green – other initiatives to offset our environmental impact

At SMI, we have also taken practical steps to reduce or mitigate the risk of negative environmental impacts. These are just some of the actions we have implemented:

  • Starting to introduce electric cars in our business fleet
  • Advocating for a reduction in car travel, use of trains and care sharing
  • Situating our Warehouse in close proximity to Southampton Docks, to minimise the travel miles of our goods upon their arrival in the UK
  • Using motion-sensitive and energy-efficient lighting in our Fareham Warehouse and Haslemere office
  • Recycling all plastic, paper, cans and packaging wherever possible
  • Ensuring all packaging for customers comprises recyclable materials
  • Offering product ‘take-back’ schemes for products once they reach the end of their natural lifecycle

We will continue to seek out positive ways to offset negative environmental impacts. You can find out more about the Woodland Trust’s invaluable work here, in addition to donating to the Trust to lend your support to their national initiatives and reforestation programmes.
