• What is a safety harness?

  A safety harness is a body-worn system designed to protect workers from falling when working at height. It distributes fall forces across the body and connects to an anchorage point using a lanyard.

• How to fit a safety harness?

  Fitting a harness correctly is key to its effectiveness. 

  Follow these key steps:

  1. Check the harness visually for signs of wear, damage or contamination.
  2. Hold the D-ring at the back and shake the harness so straps fall into place.
  3. Step into the leg straps and pull the harness over your shoulders.
  4. Fasten all buckles and ensure straps are snug but not restrictive.
  5. Adjust for a comfortable fit, especially at the thighs, chest and torso.

• Where to buy a safety harness?

• What are the rules for safety harnesses?

  In the UK, safety harness use is governed by The Work at Height Regulations 2005 and relevant PPE standards. 

  You must ensure:

  • Each harness is inspected before every use by the wearer.
  • Harnesses meet EN361 or other relevant European standards.
  • Equipment is stored, maintained and replaced according to manufacturer guidelines.
  • Formal inspections are conducted at least every 6 months (or more frequently in harsh environments).
    

  Harnesses are part of your mandatory PPE, and are subject to enforcement by the HSE.

• What is the lifespan of a safety harness?

  Most safety harnesses have a lifespan of 5 years from the date of first use, though this can vary by brand and usage environment. Always check the manufacturer’s guidance.

  When a harness reaches the end of its life, SMI offers a recycling scheme to help you dispose of PPE responsibly.

• How often should safety harnesses be inspected?

  Harnesses should be inspected:

  • Before each use by the user, checking for visible damage, wear or contamination.
  • Every 6 months by a competent person - and more frequently in harsh conditions.
  • After any fall arrest event, at which point the harness must be removed from service and assessed.
