• Where should hoses be stored?

  Hoses should always be stored in secure outbuildings or proper tool cabinets after use. 

  Try to keep them off the ground when in storage. Hook garden hoses onto walls to keep them off the floor and out of the way. 

  This stops them from becoming a trip hazard and prevents curling, which could cause damage to the pipe. 

  Allow hoses to dry before putting them away.

• How do you safely use a hose on a worksite?

  Safe worksite hose usage comes down to these factors:

  1. Inspect hoses for damage before use - check the pipe, connectors, joints, and clips for signs of wear and tear
  2. Highlight that a hose is in use with relevant hazard signs - warn all those accessing the work area that a hose is in use, as hoses can be easily tripped over
  3. Keep the ground as flat as possible - instead of stretching hoses too far, try to keep them as low to the ground as possible to prevent trips

  PPE may also be needed when using hoses:

  • Safety goggles to prevent water splashing into the eyes
  • Safety footwear will help to prevent slips and falls on wet outdoor surfaces.
