  • Yes, safety glasses are considered PPE.

They’re ideal for industries that need low-impact eye and face protection.

That said, they won’t protect from smaller particles that can travel around the spectacles – in this case, goggles will provide more protection.

A health and safety risk assessment will show you which PPE you need for your workplace.

  • There are lots of different standards for safety glasses, depending on their purpose.

All protective eyewear that’s intended for use in the workplace has to meet the European standard, EN 166:2001.

Plus, all PPE, including eye protection, has to be tested in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2016/425, to prove that it can meet the relevant protective standards.

  • Safety goggles and safety spectacles may sound similar, but there are some key differences between them.

Safety goggles create a tight seal around your face, and are secured with a strap that goes behind your head.

This makes them good for industries that need complete eye protection – for instance, in areas with dust and airborne particles.

On the other hand, safety specs look like regular glasses, with side arms that slide over your ears.

This makes them good for industries that need low-impact protection. But they won’t provide as much protection as goggles, as smaller particles could travel around the spectacles.
