  • Yes. It’s always a good idea to include eyewash in a first aid kit, as it’s an important way to treat eye injuries and can prevent potential long-term damage.

In lots of workplaces, especially those that involve hazardous materials, having eyewash provisions is also a requirement for meeting safety standards.

  • Not all businesses in the UK will legally need an eyewash station.

But every business will need to conduct a risk assessment under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, to determine whether eyecare provisions are needed.

If they are, HSE has the following requirements:

    • Containers shouldn’t be used beyond their expiry date.
    • Once the seal has been broken, containers shouldn’t be kept for reuse.
    • If mains tap water isn’t readily available for eye irrigation, at least one litre of sterile water or sterile normal saline should be provided in sealed, disposable containers.

Businesses will also need to pay special attention to guidelines and requirements related to training, signage, and where stations are located.
