  • Flame retardant workwear will usually have labels or tags that tell you that it’s flame retardant.

Look for phrases like ‘FR,’ ‘flame retardant’, or ‘flame resistant'.

However, the most important thing is to make sure that specialist clothing complies with the specific safety standards relevant to the work you’re carrying out - such as BS EN ISO 11612:2015.

  • There are several British standards for flame retardant overalls.

    These include:

    • BS EN 13034 – lays out the requirements for clothing that offers protection against liquid chemicals.
    • BS EN 1149 – lays out the requirements for clothing that offers protection from electrostatic discharge.
    • BS EN ISO 11611:2015 – lays out the requirements for clothing that offers protection during welding and similar activities.
    • BS EN 1149-5 – lays out the requirements for clothing that offers protection against electrostatic discharge in hazardous environments.
    • BS EN ISO 11612:2015 – lays out the requirements for protective clothing that limits flame spread, offers heat resistance, and protects against molten metal splashes.

A health and safety risk assessment will help you to determine which PPE you need for your workplace, as well as what standards it should meet.

  • It’s easy to place a bulk or team order of fire retardant overalls right here on the SMI website.
